Writing has been in my bones since early childhood. As Maurene J. Hinds, I've authored thirteen nonfiction books and have taught university writing courses for several years, both in the classroom and online.
So, if you've got unique experiences and insight to share, I'd love to help you do just that. Whether your work is self-help, how-to, a coming-of-age story, or another transformative genre, I'm here to help you bring your vision to life.
My work springs from my experiences of growing up with an abusive hoarder, life as a woman and mother, change, loss, and the choices we make. I've been published in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series and am currently working on a memoir, Behind Closed Doors.
Not sure where to begin as you write your book?
I've got you covered. Together, we'll clarify your book's message, and I'll support you with insight and accountability so you can craft a manuscript that shares that message with the people who need it most.
That's the power of women working together.
And that's why I love the work that I do.
I understand feeling overwhelmed, stuck in analysis paralysis, and believing you have to have every detail figured out before you start.
That's why in our work together, we'll skip the endless rewrites and focus on a streamlined process that allows you to reach your book-writing goals.
Whether you're nurturing the seeds of an idea, seeking guidance and accountability in your writing, or aiming to revise with clarity, I’m here to support you.
You won’t have to worry about harsh, discouraging feedback here. Instead, you’ll receive thoughtful, compassionate critique, complete with actionable suggestions and solutions.
Let’s get started!
I’ve been a storyteller my entire life.
It started with the tales I'd tell my second-grade class and evolved into writing novels for middle-grade and young-adult readers. Eventually, I found myself creating stories for all ages, grade school through adult.
Honestly, everyone told me I should be an English major in college. And I agreed. After all, words came naturally to me and numbers ran screaming from my mind.
So, I became that person you knew in the dorm who could crank out a paper the night before and get a decent grade.
And from there, I earned my MFA (mostly because of the accountability and deadlines that kept me on track as I got to keep writing for younger readers.) As a bonus, the degree allowed me to start teaching college writing classes, which I’ve done off and on for longer than I care to admit.
As much as I loved working on my MFA, I realized later that what had been missing was a process that combined creative flexibility and practical application with room for a dose or two of intuitive “ah ha!” moments of flow that inevitably come up (usually when doing the dishes, grocery shopping, or some other activity that seemingly has nothing to do with writing).
Still, I wrote several nonfiction books for kids and a couple of novel drafts, landed an agent for a YA novel, and enjoyed writing for young readers and being a part of that world.
Then the agent quit the business, I had a novel manuscript I couldn’t resubmit, and I was ready to quit.
That’s when I realized that I wasn’t writing to my younger self–and other kids like her. I was writing for her—to give her a voice that she didn’t have then. This realization led me to shift my focus toward adult nonfiction and memoir, where I could use my insights to help others.
And so, I packed up my “kidlit” bags and trekked over to the grownup side of the road, writing some traditional nonfiction, essays, and now a memoir.
After making the transition from "kidlit" to “grown-up” stories, I expanded my knowledge through additional editorial training. This blend of fiction and nonfiction expertise allows me to guide memoir writers in crafting compelling stories and support nonfiction writers with practical, structured processes.
Becoming certified by Author Accelerator provided me with tools that combine practicality and process with creativity.
I now help writers navigate the often conflicting advice they receive, creating a balanced, adaptable approach to planning and writing their books.
That, along with my background in writing, story structure, and being an author of several books, helped streamline the writing process (yes, revisions are still part of that process) and create a sense of ease, knowing that I didn’t need to be a “pantser” (flying by the seat of my pants) or “plotter” (having it all planned ahead of time) There was a way to use the best of both.
I now help other writers navigate the conflicting advice and create a workable plan for a book they can be proud of.
Today, I’m passionate about writing, exploring Montana’s beautiful outdoors, and helping clients like you turn your book dreams into reality to share your experience, expertise, and wisdom.
For the past 20-ish years, I've supported writers (including several published ones) at various stages in developing their creative (and academic) work. And as a published writer and creator myself, I've worked with editors and have received all forms of feedback, which has helped me hone my craft and how I present information to other writers.
In addition to my academic background, I've completed editorial training through Author Accelerator, Club Ed, and Editorial Arts. Additionally, I am a certified memoir, nonfiction, and fiction book coach through Author Accelerator's Book Coach Certification Program.
Whether you’re planning your book, writing your story, or preparing a proposal, I’m here to support you through every phase of your journey.
This coaching plan helps us both gain clarity on your work. Even if you have a solid idea, the process sharpens your focus and enhances your vision.
It varies. Monthly coaching includes two 25-page submissions each month, but how you use those pages is up to you.
Many writers prefer a mix of new and revised pages, allowing them to keep moving forward and integrating feedback while it’s still fresh.
Coaching provides clarity, but revision is an essential part of the writing process.
Few writers create a publication-ready first draft, and the number of revisions needed varies.
However, with consistent feedback and accountability, you’ll keep progressing toward your goal.
While I can’t guarantee traditional publishing or an agent (and neither can any writing coach), I can help you create your best work.
If your goal is to find an agent, I can guide you through that process as well.
Everyone starts somewhere. Coaching is tailored to your unique needs and where you are in your writing journey.
Beginning with the Message Into Motion option helps you start with a focused plan.
Absolutely! The Message Into Motion option helps you create a big-picture vision for your book.
While it includes an outline, it’s a flexible document that keeps your project on track while allowing for creativity and changes as needed.
My focus is on helping you plan and write your book. While I’ll note issues as appropriate, I don’t offer services beyond big-picture developmental editing.
I can, however, recommend professionals for copyediting, line editing, and proofreading.
I believe that writers create connections when they honor their stories, share their expertise, and contribute to a deeper understanding of the human experience.
Your book idea and story are yours.
My role is to guide you in bringing them to life, sharing what I see and offering feedback, but always respecting your vision.
You have the final say.
Writing a book is challenging, and each project brings its own set of obstacles.
With the right encouragement, we can tackle these challenges together.
Books can be catalysts for positive change.
When we walk in someone else’s shoes through the pages of a book, we gain new perspectives, and that can make all the difference in seeing someone’s humanity.
Writers create connection by uncovering and honoring their stories.
Your story is yours. My role is to help guide the process of getting that story onto the page.
…in my story. And I hope you stand in yours, too. People need to hear what we have to say.
I’m committed to helping you share your message.
I believe women’s wisdom and stories need to be heard.
When we honor our experiences, we create community, belonging, empathy, and so much more.
Your story can be transformative for your readers.
Your words have the power to change lives.
When we work together, my mission is to help you find the heart of your book or story and authentically express your message to your reader.
I’m a proud mom of two daughters in their early 20s, who inspire much of what I do. They’re the reason I’m passionate about helping women speak their truths.
I love exploring Montana’s outdoors, whether I’m hiking, kayaking, paddleboarding, or simply enjoying the natural beauty around me.
My office companions are two corgis, who are basically my husband’s dogs 90% of the time—except when it’s dinner—then they’re mine.
I’m an INFP, Enneagram Type 4, Human Design Manifestor, Year of the Dog Gemini.
