Frequently Asked Questions

What genres do you work with?

Memoir, creative nonfiction, and prescriptive nonfiction (self-help, how-to, and similar).

I work with writers who want to write a memoir or who have a completed memoir manuscript and are ready to take their work to the next level, those working on hybrid memoir (memoir and how-to/self-help combination), and those working on proposals for prescriptive nonfiction.

What is your coaching style?

I focus on providing a deep reading of your work with a gentle yet honest touch.

I will look for the primary themes and the main point of your story. I'll read your work with an analytical mind to ensure the "big" pieces are there. For example, if the conflict changes or isn't clear throughout the manuscript, I'll point out exactly where it can be emphasized. I'll focus on providing specifics rather than general comments about your work.

And, even though I aim to deliver honest and straightforward feedback based on my years of studying literature and story, I'll deliver that feedback as compassionately as possible. I never want to destroy a writer's motivation or confidence. Instead, I'll aim to help build that confidence as best I can and will cheer you on along the way.

Writing is hard! My goal is to help make the revision process as streamlined as possible by providing detailed, helpful feedback. Your story is always your story—my role is to be a guide who helps you see it through a different lens so you can make the best, informed decisions when it comes to the next draft.

How can you help me?

I can help you get started or help you keep going from where you are now.

I work with writers who want to share their story and with those who have complete manuscripts. Some want and need help from the beginning. That’s where coaching comes in. Others have a complete manuscript and know it needs "something."

Developmental editing helps tune out all the noise of self-doubt, conflicting feedback from critique partners, or any other input that gets in the way of clearly seeing your work.

I already have writing experience. What will coaching add for me?

Coaching can provide clarity and encouragement...

...which applies to all writers, regardless of experience.

I didn't work with a coach until after writing 13 nonfiction books (published), two fiction manuscripts, and a starting draft of a memoir. I don't regret it one bit!

Why should I work with you?

Experience, both professional and personal.

Most of my professional experience has revolved around literature and writing. As a published author of 13 nonfiction books, I've been on the receiving end of editorial feedback. As an instructor, I've provided feedback for hundreds, if not thousands, of students. My educational background incorporates literary analysis, creative writing, writing pedagogy. I'm a certified coach through Author Accelerator (memoir, nonfiction, and fiction) and certified editor through ClubEd (fiction and nonfiction)

Having been coached myself, I know the positive impact it can have on a writer. So I'll be in your corner, helping you see what the work needs from an empathetic but objective viewpoint. I'll provide honest feedback and specific suggestions. You'll understand why I suggest what I do, and I'll give you examples to illustrate my feedback.

I'm a firm believer in story as a powerful avenue for social change and developing empathy. Stepping into another's shoes through a story is a safe way to view the world through another's eyes and experiences to see things differently and gain insights into others’ perspectives. I believe in diverse representation, the value of multiple voices, love in all forms, bodily autonomy, equity, and science.

How does the process work?

If you're interested in working with me, please submit an interest form.

I'll review your responses and needs. I’ll also send a link where you can schedule a brief phone call to see if we're a good fit. Depending on the service, we'll discuss timelines and deliverables. If we both agree to move forward, I'll provide you with a quote and contract to review and sign. From there, I'll send an invoice, and once payment is complete, we'll get to work!

Once we have an agreement, I’ll follow up with information on how to send your work. Standard manuscript formatting is required for all submissions, which is a Word document using Times New Roman 12-point font, double spacing, one-inch margins on all sides, with each chapter beginning on a new page. In-line comments are provided in your MS using Word’s comment feature and occasionally the track changes feature.

What is book coaching?

Book coaching is a lot like it sounds—guidance from a knowledgeable person who can help you uncover your book and bring it to life.

I provide specific, detailed feedback for making improvements. Coaching is tailored to your work, your process, and your words. It's having someone in your writing corner who can use their expertise to help you make effective changes to your work and processes.

It can be hard for writers to see their work objectively—it's too close to them. As a coach, I can provide that outside perspective and questions to help you hone your message. However, your work is always yours--you know what you want to say. I help you bring it forward.

With my support, you'll get honest, kindly delivered feedback and encouragement, and someone cheering you on as you make your way through drafting, revising, and preparing your work for the submission processes.

How does book coaching differ from editing?

Editing services tend to be more “one and done.”

You submit your work, and get feedback, and that is the end of the process. Book coaching is a more personal, hands-on experience. With coaching, you have more of a back-and-forth working relationship.

What is developmental editing?

Developmental editing is a writing service that looks at every aspect of your writing:

plot, structure, character development, pacing, and style.

A developmental editor will analyze the writing to ensure it works on all levels. It focuses on the structure of writing and how individual elements work together.

A thorough developmental edit will point out areas that work well in your manuscript, so you'll know what to continue doing. It will also show areas that may be weaker or need additional development. However, it doesn't stop there. The developmental edit provides specific suggestions and options for addressing those issues. In other words, you'll have a complete set of information and a clear path for what to do next.

I use my experience as a certified developmental editor (fiction and nonfiction) to help you develop your book from planning through writing, revising, and pitching.

If I work with you, will I get an agent/be published/or have a successful book?

Maybe. Maybe not. Publishing has a lot of variables.

I offer no guarantees that you'll land an agent, a publishing deal, or have a best-selling book.

The market is unpredictable and sometimes finicky. What I can do is give you specific guidance based on years of experience to help you improve your work and keep moving forward.

Why do I need to complete a manuscript review before working on revisions or pitching?

The best way I can help you navigate revisions and/or the pitching process is by taking a deep dive into your story.

The manuscript review lets me get to know your story and provide specific feedback regarding revisions and next steps. We can then create a plan tailored to your story and your goals.

Is my work protected?

Your work is entirely yours!

I take what you have and help you make it stronger. I may help you see your story differently, but you are always in charge of any changes or suggestions you choose to implement. I provide reasoning behind my suggestions, so if you choose to go a different route, you'll have that input to make informed choices.

My examples are just that—you get to decide what and how much you incorporate.

Your work is also safe. I keep your work and story vision confidential. Similarly, your work will not be stolen, paraphrased, or used by me in any way other than to help you make it shine.

How do I get started?

It’s simple!

Please click on the Submit Interest Form below and provide information about your manuscript and needs. No payment is required. You are not obligated to continue; this is a first step to see if we’re a good fit.

I typically respond within 1-2 business days. Thank you!
